Distributed Antenna Systems

What Is a DAS?

A distributed antenna system (DAS) is a network of indoor antennas connected by coaxial cable or fiber to a central amplifier system. The DAS receives cellular signal from carrier towers via a donor antenna, amplifies it, and redistributes it through the indoor coverage antennas — providing uniform cellular coverage throughout a building.

A DAS is different from a signal booster. A booster is a single device for small spaces. A DAS is an engineered system designed for buildings where a booster cannot provide adequate coverage.

Passive vs Active Architectures

Passive DAS

Uses coaxial cable to distribute the amplified signal from a single BDA to multiple indoor antennas. Simpler and less expensive. Suitable for smaller buildings (typically under 100,000 sq ft) with adequate donor signal.

Active DAS

Uses fiber optic cable and remote amplification units (RAUs) to distribute signal over long distances without signal loss. More complex and capable. Suitable for large buildings, campuses, hospitals, and venues (typically over 100,000 sq ft).

System Components

Outdoor antenna that receives the cellular signal from the carrier tower.

Coverage Antennas

Indoor antennas distributed throughout the building to provide uniform coverage.

Amplifier / BDA

Bi-directional amplifier that boosts the signal between donor and coverage antennas.

Cabling Infrastructure

Coaxial cable (passive) or fiber (active) connecting the system components.
